I played pathways and the original marathon with keyboard only, at first.
These days, WASD + mouse for all FPS games.
For sometime I played FPS games, including Marathon, and online multiplayer too, with a kensington turbo mouse trackball. No problem, won a few games too, not a lot, but a few, when I was lucky XD
I've never tried it, but I imagine playing with a trackpad must be impossible.
