In Response To: Re: Tour of Duty - Bigger Guns Nearby (Philtron)

: You can get bored of anything "eventually", that's not really an
: argument.

But you get bored even faster when the AI is so predictable. It's difficult to predict an Elite from Halo. It's child's play to predict a Fighter from Marathon.

: As I said before, you won't get bored by the AI if you engage the game beyond
: the superficial level (also, playing with crosshairs "on" gives
: you a significant advantage over the AI which may be part of why you think
: it's "poor").

No, even without crosshairs it's poor. It's just 'run at enemy and hope to smack him.' It's like a dumbed-down version of Flood AI from Halo. They don't do anything interesting. Elites in Halo at least do interesting things (like getting tagged in the back with plasma grenades by a fellow Grunt).

: You should look deeper into that first level, maybe you'll get more out of
: it.

If you insist, I will. I'll have to come up with an interesting handicap.

: The enemies do "new things" only on a superficial level. Whether an
: enemy goes left or right, advances or retreats, doesn't really change the
: way you play except in terms of superficial minutia. That whole
: "lather, rinse, repeat" you're talking about and learning
: "the same old cycle for a level", that's true of just about
: every single video game ever made ever including Halo.

Yes, but it's especially true of Marathon.

: That's the thing. Crosshairs aren't aesthetic; they change the way the game
: plays completely.

Good point. Still, I prefer having them there, even if it hardly improves my gameplay.

: I'm not trying to be some die-hard Marathon elitist here. I really think
: you're robbing yourself of much of the experience by playing with
: crosshairs in single player. New texture packs, enhanced visuals, that's
: all understandable. Fog? Well, I don't see where you're coming from there,
: but sure, whatever floats your boat. However, the crosshairs are a real
: game changer and you'll enjoy the game a lot more without them because
: that's how it was designed to be played. As a comparison, imagine someone
: told you they were playing Halo, but it was a version that let them lock
: onto the head of their target when shooting, so they always got headshots.
: And then they said that the AI was poor.

First off, fog makes the levels look really cool. Try Again got really creepy for me, with all that red/orange fog and the dark music and all the Hunters and Enforcers around. Second, crosshairs still require you aim. You can't just look in the general direction of a foe and know it's gonna hit. You have to aim. Now, as I've said, they're useless with an AR. However, you still kinda have to aim nicely with the Rocket Launcher, and you definitely have to aim nicely with the Pistols. The SMG does have the little round sight that does help once you've learned the trick with it. However, in each case, the crosshairs help. And on Multiplayer, you need all the help you can get when you're playing against somebody who is a skilled veteran of Marathon (trust me, I've been there).

Cheers,
Perseus
