: Placed by hand, eh? Doesn't that limit the replay ability of levels?

It only limits the replayability if the only thing you care about is being surprised, which is a valid but superficial way to play the game.

: I mean, once you've played a level, you know what you're up against at every turn
: the next time you play.

So what?

Knowing what you're up against the next time you play let's you engage the game on a deeper level. It's similar to books and movies; even though they're exactly the same each time through it is because they are the same each time through that you're able to get more out of them with every reading.

I'm not knocking procedural variation. It has it's uses such as in compact "invader" modes like Firefight, where it's about falling into a zen-like rhythm within a small "arena" space. I suppose you could say the same thing about general multiplayer except the variation is generated by the players and not the computer. But, for linear, narrative experiences like the single player in Marathon or Halo I think that the "hand placed" method is much better. It gives the designer more control over what he's presenting to you and each time you repeat a section you can experience it in more depth.

Also, from one of your other posts it sounds like you're playing Marathon with crosshairs on. What are you doing playing Marathon with crosshairs on?
