The Klingons in Star Trek don't take prisoners either, and they're far from being machines. I think there is an even more compelling reason to believe they are not machines. In Pfhor Your Eyes Only, in M1, there are some cybernetic hybrid hunters not unlike the "controller" that oversees all the S'pht. There would be no point to such a beast if the hunters were entirely machines. And of course there's all that gooey stuff that oozes out of hunters after you kill them.
