In Response To: Re: Why not go PHPBB!? (RyokoTK)

: I believe http://www.gamefaqs.com uses php-based boards. They're pretty
: bare-bones - no avatars, no images, small signatures, no smileys;
: basically the whole thing is very 56k-friendly. Additionally, it has
: compulsory registration (this really should be included) and, AFAIK, a
: relatively friendly admin interface. But it's up to you; I don't
: particularly mind this layout.

1) They're custom; they wrote the board themselves.
2) There's no threading there.

(2 is actually more important than 1, I think.)

The biggest complaint people have with this style is that all of the posts show, even when a thread is not of interest to them. Before Rampancy.net was Rampancy.net, when Ferrex was still a fan and not an employee, he modified the Core's version of WebBBS to show threads collapsed unless they had new posts since your last visit. I always thought that was really, really cool.

I just haven't ever found the time to add that code here (and he couldn't extract it for me; there was too much ELSE that had been modified in his version).
