In Response To: Re: Rubicon Story Synopsis? (Yossarian)

I'm going to give you the short version because my wife will call any minute wondering why I haven't come home yet. I'm also going to assume that you're very familiar with M1, M2 and Moo.

Rubicon builds on the story of the end screen of M2. As you'll recall, we learn at the end of M2 that the combined fleets of the UESC and the S'Pht'Kr sack the Pfhor homeworld in 2881 AD. Unfortunately, there is no mention of our involvement in this epic battle, and all we know about Durandal is that he's off with his S'Pht on the Rozinante to explore a rogue star with another ruined world. No fair - it sounds like we're going to miss all the action! And then there was Infinity with its multiple time lines from which we emerge as a God and Durandal has merged with Thoth. Now that doesn't sound too interesting, either. Rubicon gives us the chance to have the Marathon sequel that we'd all like to play. It assumes that Infinity restored the original M2 timeline, so that the events from the M2 End Screen do in fact come to pass, and that Durandal couldn't resist the opportunity to get involved in the human/Pfhor war.

Chimara Plank

When Rubicon begins, the human forces have made a major push deep into Pfhor space and the flagship of the UESC, the Chimera, has just crash-landed on Pfhor prime. Durandal sends us to the rescue, to help save as many humans as possible and, more importantly from Durandal's standpoint, to rescue the onboard AI, Haller. Haller is a new type of "wet" AI that combines organic and cybernetic components. Durandal tells us he wants to avoid the AI falling into Pfhor hands, but in reality he wants the technology for himself. At the end of the Chimera Plank, Durandal sends us to shut down the Chimera's main reactor before it goes critical. Regardless of whether or not we succeed, Admiral Caroway, the genius of the UESC's strategy against the Pfhor, will be captured by the Pfhor. If we do succeed, however, Durandal will take notice of a small Pfhor contingent slipping out of Phfor space heading on an unknown trajectory. This will lead us to the Salinger Plank. If we fail, Durandal will notice Caraway's absense and send us to the Pfhor Plank.

Salinger Plank

We will follow the Pfhor to a top secret UESC base called the Salinger, which is in orbit around a rogue star. This apparently is not the same rogue star alluded to at the end of M2 which forms the basis of Ernie's WMaiD, but it's interesting to speculate. In any case, the Salinger serves a dual purpose, being both a UESC research station and a research station for the Dangi Corporation. Dangi is the largest corporation in UESC held space, and a major defense contractor. When we arrive, we find the Salinger under attack by the Pfhor and our help is desperately needed. Our first task is to repair the station's primary AI, Charlie, but in reality we end up bypassing him and giving control to the rampant Dangi AI, Lysander. After fighting and defeating the Pfhor, there is chance that we will stumble upon some personal logs of Dangi scientists that indicate that Dangi has been secretly developing a genetically engineered virus, the Achilles Virus, that can destroy all of humanity, that the Dangi Board of Directors intends to use to take complete control of the UESC. Worse, they have been collaborating with the Pfhor, using their POWs to test antidotes to Achilles so that they can be sure that there is a UESC left to govern. Apparently, they are aiding the Pfhor just enough to slow their inevitable defeat, buying time to develop that antidote. If we discover the truth, we'll continue in the Salinger Plank. If not, we'll return to the Pfhor Plank.

OK, staying in the Salinger Plank, we know that all's not well on the Salinger and we're going to break into the Dangi sector to investigate. We learn more about Dangi's dastardly plot, but Lysander has no intention of letting us get away with spoiling their party and so he takes us prisoner and hands us over to our good old friends, the Pfhor. Bummer. With Durandal's help, we escape the Pfhor, but learn that they managed to steal a copy of the formula for the Achilles Virus and have taken it to a remote outpost to manufacture it and use it against us. We can't let that happen, can we? So we battle the Pfhor and retake the formula and, oops hand it over to Durandal? Do we really trust him? Unfortunately, he doesn't exactly give us a choice (at least not in the original version of Rubicon - stay tuned for Rubicon X). At this point we have a chance to return to the Pfhor plank via a dream sequence. Why would we do this? To keep Durandal from obtaining Achilles, of course, but more on that later. Continuing in the Salinger Plank, we return to the Salinger to confront and destroy Lysander. In the process, we learn that Lysander was responsible for the design of Achilles and that there will never be a cure for Achilles - he intends to rid the universe of the rot of humanity, nice guy that he is. We then fight the Dangi folks to the finish, a task made infinitely more difficult by their manufacture of their own simulcrum AR Bobs. During the fighting, the Dangi scientists disappear - I wonder where they might have gone?

In the end, the Dangi Board of Directors were arrested, tried for treason and executed. The UESC defeated the Pfhor and Durandal lived happily ever after with his copy of the Achilles Virus and a bunch of Dangi scientists to keep him company.

Pfhor Plank

When Caroway disappears, Durandal smells a rat and suspects that Tycho is involved, which it turns out he is. We visit Pfhor prime, learn that the good admiral is being held in a mining station and we go to rescue him. If we succeed in rescuing him, we return to the Salinger Plank, where we have a chance to discover the evil that is going on there. If we are unsuccessful and Tycho kills the admiral, we cry for vengeance and go after Tycho. Durandal thinks he has a foolproof way to double cross him in which we pretend to help free him from Pfhor control in return for which he grants us access to the Pfhor network. Once Tycho is free, we upload a computer virus into his ship's network, only to discover that Tycho is no fool and he is really on another ship that is far, far away. That is the last we will hear of Tycho, but being the nice guy that he is, he returns the favor by putting us in a Pfhor prison. Eventually, Durandal breaks us out and we return to the task of helping the UESC to defeat the Pfhor. But first we are given one last chance to return to the Salinger Plank to prevent the release of Achilles. If we fail to do so, we will land on Pfhor Prime, battle the Pfhor, fight our way into the Pfhor Citadel and destroy the Pfhor High Council. The UESC will land only to find that the Pfhor are already in total chaos. After the war, the Achilles virus is released and the Dangi Board uses a vaccine against it to blackmail the UESC into granting them a virtual dictatorship that will rule for hundreds of years.

Analysis

So what is the right path to take? The Jjaro communicate with us extensively in Rubicon through our dreams, constantly trying to steer us to the Salinger Plank, where we will defeat the evil of the Dangi Corporation. The Pfhor Plank, however, is more difficult, but a lot more fun to play. The bottom line is that we have a choice - either we defeat the Dangi Corp and give the Achilles Virus to Durandal, or we help to defeat the Pfhor, who will be defeated anyway, and stand by while the Dangi Board kills billions and rules the UESC for hundreds of years. It's clear why the Jjaro would not want to see the Dangi Board gain control, as this would significantly alter the balance of power, but I doubt that they would want Durandal to have the power of Achilles in his clutches either, which is why they leave the choice to us. In the end, it may well be better to let the Dangi Board succeed, even though they are evil, as eventually they will be defeated and humankind will once again be free. If Durandal gets ahold of Achilles, he will always know that he can use it should he ever feel threatened or need to use humanity for his own personal gain. There is a third choice however - one that we are never given the chance to take in the game. Tycho makes us an offer and, just as in Infinity where it is necessary to help Tycho to ultimately prevent the release of the W'rkncacnter, by helping Tycho there is just a chance that we may be able to prevent Durandal from acquiring Achilles, prevent Achilles from being released and make sure that the Pfhor are defeated in the end. Too bad we aren't given the chance to try that route - or are we? . . .

And that's the short version!
