In Response To: Re: Two different balances (yakaman) : My two favorite campaigns were Halo 1 and ODST, neither of which included : formal PvP multi-player. That's one commonality - another is that neither : included DMRs or Battle Rifles. Well, Halo 1 did have offline MP, and it did have the pistol, which was that game's mid-range precision weapon. : I understand why DMRs and BRs are so crucial to PvP multi-player
I don't think mid-range rifles are necessary starting gear for MP, at least not on most smaller 4v4 maps. I always found AR starts to be more interesting for small maps. DMR starts in Team Slayer in Reach made it to where you can't go anywhere without someone being able to ping you from across the map with impunity at any time, and now in Halo 4 everyone has a headshot rifle available in MP at all times. :/ But yeah, combat in Campaign has been forced to longer-ranged engagements over time. I remember in Halo 1 being able to engage Elites up close just using the AR. For me, single-player combat is still most interesting in the first game. : Same goes with grenades and other weapons
We could have powerful grenades if they weren't starting equipment. When you give everyone two grenades every time they spawn, you get a ton of grenade spam. And to counter the prevalence of grenade spam, grenades have become progressively weaker over time. Frags are almost useless firecrackers in Halo 4 MP.
