In Response To: Re: My H4 review - Campaign (Gameplay and Story) (Bry) : Calm down. Okay. Your "gripping" comment set me off. : I will say that Sonic CD isn't the best example and your also mistaken in how
Oh, right, whoops. (I know the 2011 version uses it as an option; I played the Windows 95 Sonic CD long ago, and I've almost exclusively been using the original CD spindash, hence my cluelessness.) Still, it was made an option because the CD version was an interfacing clumsiness for a lot of people in a similar respect to the button pressing here; a bit of very brief stopping and then waiting when they could be doing something. Your argument here demonstrates that it's an even smaller mechanical difference than I thought, yet people perceptually still found the later game's system lacking the mechanical flow of the prior game. : : But for many of us : Given the population of this forum, I'm not sure 8 (thus far) could really be
Out of what population, and how are we assessing it? The more back and forth we go on the statistical analysis train, the more ridiculous we sound. Ah well, I must continue to go at it! :) Even if people don't find something offensive enough to immediately speak up about it on HBO, that doesn't imply that they don't find it to be a negative change. Most of the people who have bothered to post on this issue are in fairly strong disagreement with the idea behind the new system, while those very few who have bothered to post in favour of this system (like yourself) do not seem terribly far in that direction from being neutral; my gut feeling is that the attitudes are probably slightly skewed overall against the new button system. : Speaking of risk/reward, where do assassinations figure into all this?
Assassinations are optional, and people do complain when they try to do a regular back melee and wind up assassinating due to timing weirdnesses, to the point that some players have said they wished there was a way to completely disable assassinations. This brings up an interesting psycological point, though: if the button system was changed to be more like the back-melee system (so that you could choose an instant press), would people:
Ooh ooh, another one!: Is the system more tolerable if you hold down the button press button on your controller throughout the entire button sequence? dihgdguklsdgufgsd! Part of me doesn't want to continue this train of thought, as I think the simpler system does feel much more fluid, and that the most satisfying approach for me would be to not even have the option. I like just using regular back melees, as long as they're the juicy, smooth Halo 1 sort. I was never totally sold on the dry, twitchy crunches of Halo's 2 and 3, even if the ragdolling could get amusing. Okay, I need to stop this post before I become completely incoherent.
