That these things are refered to "dials" leads me to believe that rotating them in some way may lead to something. Maybe turning them in a certain pattern (such as a padlock combination) using mathematical operators (clockwise is addition, counter-clockwise is subtraction)..
I was also wondering if anybody thought that these might have anything to do with sound or tones. Maybe these things involve other senses entirely, though I somehow doubt that we'd be getting a smell-o-gram from Bungie.. ;)
Also, has anybody seen Contact? The arrangement of the pages into three-dimensional figures played a major role in decoding the plans for the spinny-do (only in the movie, though). Maybe we should try something similar, or at least go beyond looking at them as a set of seven, flat, boring dials.
