I'm glad you thought it was polished, but other people didn't. And it hasn't been under continuous full-time development for 10 years, so no there wasn't that much room for improvement. Mainly, there was an HD weapons plugin that was going to be done "soon" back then, and then... kept dying and almost coming back to life and dying and almost coming back to life... and meanwhile some levels got changed around in chapter 3 (some removed and others added) and I redid the terminal graphics which inspired me to redo the terminal textures which got me started on redoing all of the textures, and also there was a new floating HUD made, but then that petered out and I kinda gave up on everything when the weapons looked like they would never materialize, so I just released what there was so far (changed levels, HUD, partially redone textures, updated terminals) as 1.1 a few years back, with no weapons and no full texture upgrade. But then out of the blue Tacticus (who was not responsible for the original weapon project) made new weapons, and that kicked me into finishing off the texture upgrade, including glow maps and bump maps that give everything a much more "3D" look (you can see screenshots in that Pfhorums thread), and while I'm at it also going over all the maps once more to try to make them suck less. That will be most evident in chapter 5, which seems to be agreed as the worst chapter of the game. The monsters there are almost completely redone, with spookier Nightmares remodeled a bit after the Banshees and the Headless replaced entirely with something new in the same vein as those. The combat is being completely reworked around those new monsters there too. I also discovered that a bit of MML that had been set since way back in the earliest versions even was washing out all of the lighting on all of the maps, which is why everyone thought the lighting sucked. I've changed that MML, and am also touching up the lighting manually as I go through the maps, so everything should be much more dramatically lit now. Here's some comparison shots of 1.2b1, 1.1, and 1.0:
