I see now. Aleph One on Windows at least thinks it's out of memory when it's not. It doesn't even seem to be using virtual RAM (i.e. using extra hard disk space as main memory if there's not enough actual RAM) so it automatically terminates. My laptop has 16 GB of memory and can run Crisis without too much slowdown, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider with a small amount of slowdown, if I use my GPU and mess with the graphics settings a bit.

If it works on my Mac, then I'd say it's a bug with the windows version of Aleph One. I'm just about to test the Mac version now. (using the prologue chapter as the testing ground, as that's where I encountered the memory bug on windows)
