: Halo is just an updated remake of Marathon for what was, at the time, the
: next generation. Everything in Marathon parallels something in Halo, it's
: just super good fun.
I wouldn't necessarily say that: Marathon and Halo are two different kinds of FPS. Marathon is more like PiD - lots of puzzles, exploration, and very simple combat. Halo, on the other hand, is unique - the combat is based around motion and tactical thinking. It may not feel like it, but you're really making bazillions of tactical choices: picking which weapon to use, doing threat assessment, figuring out how things are flowing and trying to handle that flow, etc. The best example would be the Far Area Defence plan for the Rockslide Megabattle - all the tactical thinking comes into play there.
: The only problem is that there is some kind of backlash against Halo, because
: it's so popular. Damn man, I love that game! I don't mind if everybody
: else loves it too. Even if a lot of the people who do are... dumb.
I absolutely love Halo too, for the very reasons that make it special - the tactical thinking as well as the light-hearted feeling gotten from listening to Grunts or Marines or looking around at the waterfalls and cliffs. Also, it's Bungie - as long as they're not being too fantastical (which is my big gripe with what I've seen of Destiny), they rock. PiD was fine on that account because the fantasy elements didn't feel like fantasy; they felt like sci-fi.
