There's no way the destruction of the Tau Ceti colony would be a mystery to anyone from Earth in or after 2850. Even if we pretend that Leela's light-speed warning from 2794 would actually need 92 years to cross the 11.9 ly between Tau Ceti and Sol, this is decades after Durandal dropped by Sol to warn the UESC of the Pfhor threat and show them how to build FTL missiles. Robert Blake and his surviving comrades have long since returned home as well. And looking at the meager content we've gotten so far, neither the verdant surface environments nor the giant ship in orbit resemble the nuked-to-bedrock colony site or hollowed-out Martian moon we would expect. But maybe Bungie has answers for all of this. Maybe Tau Ceti has seen a second failed attempt at colonization, and this colony and ship post-date the Pfhor incursion. Maybe it's an alternate timeline, although that would make the new game's feeble raison d'etre even more tenuous. I suppose we'll find out eventually.
