I like what I see.
The whole narrative concept reminds me of Return to Marathon, revisiting a derelict that's been warped by time and the experiments within. Not a bad place to start.
I grew up with Marathon, at a time when adventure games were quickly giving way to games with guns. I thought the narrative bits were top notch, it really opened some doors in my head about how stories in games could be told and how they can swing from the familiar to the uncomfortable.
(I am one of the weird ones that loved Marathon Infinity to bits.)
Though I've played through quite a few mods, I feel like the narrative was always a bit hard for them to get right. Rubicon gave some easy answers, felt like a Star Wars prequel trilogy all-in-the-family gathering, which was probably enough for players who wanted answers rather than ***even more questions***.
I had more fun with Morgana's Revenge, Trojan, even Operation Tantalus, when the mods were happier to tell their own stories.
Now that games have swung a bit more in the other direction, more narratives less BLAM, I'm less comfortable playing games with guns. I don't know where new Marathon's going to fit in my life, but I'm glad that new players are excited for it.
The art direction feels... well if you're going to source an art director that worked on Dune and the ScarJo Ghost in the Shell movie, I think you're doing something right. Roger Deakins is probably out of Bungie's price range, big as Bungie is in video games.
It is going to feel at least a little weird to see a Marathon that's a service game rather than a modding platform.
At the same time, there's been enough time between Marathon and now that I don't think it would be possible to have a big budget Marathon without pitching it as either a service game or an open world game. As Microsoft appears to have scaled back support for open world Halo, this was probably one of the better outcomes.
New Marathon won't replace classic Marathon. It won't do great things for search results (...oh no, I can see the ChatGPT generated bogus LORE and guides now...) but we'll still have our own comfortable places to crawl inside.
