Indeed. Given the vaunted rate of burnout in the games industry, I can't imagine any of Bungie's current writing crew worked on Marathon.

And when they're really making references, they're usually more subtle than that. It reeks of some of the callback jokes made in Half-Life 2; it has nothing to do with the original game, but it cribs from the familiar verbiage.
