amazing... this level of historical / political knowledge & understanding easily surpasses my friends who call themselves 'poli sci majors' as well as what i find on some political forums...
btw, i'm not sure Britain (& Rome also, for that matter) wanted to be empires either. The ones that set out to be empires fall quickly (Napoleon, Alexander the Great, Japan). Britain, Rome, & now the US expanded slowly, with much home front resistance, and for border protection.

japan's another place to watch. WW2 didn't crush their imperialist attitudes. it just removed their means of becoming an empire.

$10 (US) says that when Quebec finally secedes, the rest of Canada applies to join the US within 6 months. apparently the provinces (4 of them?) east of quebec have a not-so-secret plan to join the US immediately should quebec [stupidly] secede. i don't even mind canada & france; they're like the moths that gather around my porch light - impotent insects...
