In Response To: Re: The time of wrath is nigh... (FriendlyFire)
: I've been thinking about this possibility more and more of late. Let's assume
: that Humanity is somehow related to the Forerunner (whether a direct
: descendant or preferred race is irrelevant) and that the Prophets are
: trying to maintain their power. This whole scenario is not unlike the
: periods before the medieval renaissance. The Catholic church, then quite
: powerful, branded some emerging scientists as heritics and threatened
: ex-communication when thier discoveries disproved existing church
: doctrines. Why? Quite simply because it usurped thier power. If people saw
: that something that the Church decreed was in err then couldn't their
: other decrees be incorrect as well?
: Although this creates a strong argument as to why the Covenant have waged a
: war of genecide against humankind (assuming, of course, that Humanity is
: somehow related to the Forerunner) I don't think that this will lead to a
: complete reversal of the conflict. To back this statement up, I refer back
: to my pre-renaissance analogy. When one was branded as a heretic any words
: they divulged were deemed to have come from the Devil. Therefore, anything
: they said in their defence is seen as an apparent attempt at deception.
: It's the inevitable trap of being branded a heretic that prevents you from
: proving that you're not one. This is not unlike the classic witch-hunt
: eras as well where to prove that you weren't in league with the Devil
: (i.e. practiced witchcraft) you had to drown. Not much of a defence but
: this is what gave the accusers their enormous power; the very act of being
: accused prevented you from proving otherwise.
: I believe that this is not unlike our Prophets vs. Humanity theory. Being
: branded as heretics, anything that Humanity offers in its defence may be
: seen as an attempt at subterfuge. In any case, the zealous hatred the
: Covenant sees for the human race is perhaps to deep to be completely
: unseated. I think the best case is that, as a result of this possible
: Humanity/Forerunner revelation, the Covenant may be divided. In effect,
: the Covenant may break into two disparate factions: Those who believe the
: Human/Forerunner connection and those that do not. As a result of this,
: perhaps a Covenant civil war or even a complete disolution of the Covenant
: might ensue. In either case this could work to Humanity's benefit and give
: us the reprieve that we so desparately require.
