Whatever you've used is saved as a cookie on your machine... so you can have it welcome you back as anyone you want. However, to post, if a profile for that username exists, you must have the proper password in order to get your post accepted (and the profile resides on the server).

Yes. The cookie on your computer has no way of telling whether the encrypted password stored in your profile on the server is the same as the one it stores in the password field - until you try to match them.

Sorry for the confusion...
