That is to say, could it be that they rebel in the middle of the game (or MC stumbles into an ongoing rebellion) and that's the big surprise? That would provide for some of those 3-way battles. Of course, having an entirely different species show up (like the Flood did) would do that as well . . . but it would have to fit into the story line really well. No-one wants it to be like, "and then, suddenly, from a planet far far away, the Finger-Puppet-People show up and go to war with both humanity and the Covenant," which would just be inelegant. But, that, somehow doesn't seem like Bungie style. It seems more likely that the Forerunners will make an appearance, as people have speculated, but I'm not sure I like that idea either. Not only are they cooler as a mystery, but also their technology (i.e. building the Halo) seems so overwhelming that they would have to be pretty seriously hobbled in some way to keep the game playable and logical. whatever,
