He was talking about the blast radius being 25,000 light-years, not the radius of the galaxy being 25,000 light-years... Anyway, for some math... -25,000 light-years in radius gives a sphere with a volume of about 65.45 trillion cubic light-years. (4/3 pi r³) -The galaxy is not a sphere. It's more like a flat disc. I'm going to make some assumptions, because I don't know the real facts... -Assumed: The "galaxy" is a disk with radius 2.5 million light-years, and height of about say, 1/10th of that, or 250,000 light-years. -The volume of the "galaxy" is then 4.9 10^18 cubic light-years in volume (that's 4.9 billion billion). (pi r² • h) -Dividing those two numbers gives... 75,000 . That's a lot of Halos. -Remember, that number above also assumes perfect packing arrangements, but with spheres, the packing is just horrible. The real number in much greater. -How much greater? Well, since I'm bored... -Assume that, because you want to make every bit of space covered by at least one sphere and don't care about the overlaps, the effective volume of each station is actually a cube inscribed in the sphere. -As everyone knows (...) the edge length of a cube inscribed in a sphere is equal to the radius of the sphere, in this case 25,000 light-years. So the effective volume is 15 5/8 trillion cubic light-years. -With that number we get (!) 314,159.26 Halos. (That's 100,000 pi, by some _strange_ coincidence :-) For those of you that don't believe my cube/sphere thing, work the math yourself. It's true.
