While the shotgun is the most effective weapon in the Chief's arsenal, it may not be an effective weapon by the standards of the Forerunners.

Of course... if he was infected, he would be dead, and you would be returning to your last saved point. ;)

Guilty Spark gives his opinion of the Chief's equipment in a few places during the Library level. I won't quote him here, but I'm sure someone will at some point.
