In Response To: Not such a 'sober' post, methinks... (Miguel Chavez)
: Louis Wu characterized your post as 'sobering' on networking XBoxes via the
: internet. I don't really think so, and the forums out there have been
: really good about communicating what the network gurus out there are
: thinking. Below is a snippet of posts from one particular forum and it
: looks like these folks are more than your average John Doe computer user.
: This of course doesn't answer the question of latency issues and the like,
: but hey, what's the harm in trying?:
Okay, I've been following Jym's posts now for a couple of days - it seems he actually might get somewhere, and he knows what he's talking about. And even more heartening, he's planning (probably after the Thanksgiving break) to release a linux boot disk with everything you need to turn your PC into a VPN host. (Is that the right terminology?) He's skeptical that if you increased the number of connected networks above 2 that the latency WOULDN'T get in the way of gameplay... but even still, the possibility of 2-player multiplay from remote locations (or 8-player, if you got two teams of 4 together) is pretty damn cool.
That STILL doesn't mean it's gonna be open to everyone - yo'ure gonna need a PC or a linux box sitting open, ready to handle the networking during play time, on BOTH ENDS. And latency WILL be an issue, I'd bet, for a large percentage of the connections. I have no doubt that it will work... but it won't really be a viable option for most people. (For those willing to put in the effort to get it running, though, and with the proper resources... heh. For them, it'll be online Xbox Halo. :) )
