To get xbox traffic from one node (XBOX) to another node (remote XBOX) and vice versa via the Internet, you almost certainly need one of two conditions:

1) XBox has a IP stack
2) or you encapsulate XBox traffic in IP packet so it can be routed to appropriate destination node.

Since it sounds like the XBox uses some proprietary protocol it will not be routed by your ISP(IPX, Appletalk, NetBEUI, DLC, and SNA are all examples of protocols which are generally not routed). ISP's generally only route IP packets, which is how you surf the net, download stuff, etc. One way to accomplish XBox communication online would be to have a PC with two network cards, and and OS which supports IPsec or VPN technologies (BSD, Linux, Windows). Plug the XBox into one nick on the PC and your DSL/Cable modem (ISP end) into the other. You could then setup a VPN/IPsec on the PC network card connected to your ISP and forward all traffic from PC/XBox network card to the PC/ISP network card. The XBox at the other end would need a similar setup and this probably wouldn't work well over phone lines, but you could try it out! It could take some time to setup the PC... hope this helps.

: The vast majority of the posters in that thread, though not lacking in
: enthusiasm, are very lacking in understanding of how LANs, WANs, and
: networking in general works.

: I guess it is possible, with the right software, to use a PC to route an
: XBox's LAN traffic over a broadband connection, but you cannot just use a
: LAN hub, or have a router magically send non-IP LAN traffic over an IP
: based WAN.

: If anyone wants to try this, you're probably going to need two PCs, both with
: two network interfaces (one connected to the XBox, the other connected to
: you modem), and some software that builds a virtual LAN over an IP
: connection (I have no idea what kind of software offers this service...
: VPN). It's worth trying, but not worth investing a great deal of money in
: hubs and routers and whatever else you think you might need.
