In Response To: Halo 4 and Gen Y's libido (Cody Miller) A very interesting interpretation that I disagree with completely. John isn't putting up a facade to present himself as a hero. Indoctrinated to be an emotionless war machine, he is completely lacking in subtly or guile. He sees himself as nothing more than a tool performing a function. The hero mythos was constructed around him by others. It is only through his interaction with Cortana that John is able to find an inkling of human contact, because she is uniquely sympathetic to his existential condition. He, a natural born human who lacks humanity; she, an artificial construct that feels so acutely as to be dangerous. To John, other people are either superiors to obey, peers to respect, civilians to protect, or enemies to eliminate. To him, everybody is defined by how protocol dictates he should treat them. The fact that John and Cortana can have a long association without the hang-ups of normal meatspace interaction is precisely why he is able to value her on an independent, personal level. This is not love or lust or any such primitive instinct. Cortana makes John a whole person, in a very literal sense. Losing her means John is finally aware of what he was lacking. The fact that so many people define this wonderfully complex relationship as some kind of rote 'unresolved sexual tension' is really sad and disappointing.
