In Response To: Halo 4 and Gen Y's libido (Cody Miller)

I bought ALL of it, right up until this part:

: Here comes the Master Chief.

I think your analysis of the male's role in contemporary society is spot on, but I am far from convinced that the chief is a metaphor for us. Rather, I think the chief (and video in general) are intended to fill this exact niche: they are marketed to the man who has been told "you must be important to be loved".

The chief is an empty shell that you fill with yourself, to aid in the immersion, the experience of the game. This has one function, and that's escapism. it's so you can feel important and interesting and powerful. Granted, this is a SMALL part of the game as a whole - the game still has to be fun, involving, challenging, et cetera. But the reason video game characters are big burly men who are important and have take-charge attitudes is BECAUSE men in real life cannot live up to that ideal.

And I'm obviously not only talking about grown men like myself, I'm talking about angsty teenagers too, who suffer from this inferiority complex the most of anyone.

I could have gone into a rant here about emasculation and the stigmitization of masculinity these days, but I avoided the subject as I wouldn't want the thread to devolve into a flame war about gender issues. I don't think that would make Wu happy. If you want to have that discussion, email me.
