: Looking back on H:CE as a standalone piece, I suspect Bungie's original

Y'know, when you think about it, the Human/Covenant War is just a backdrop in the Bungie trilogy (as a prequel, Reach is excusable).

Half of Halo 2 is spent playing as the Arbiter and by the final stage, he's fighting alongside Johnson.
All of Halo 3 is spent with Covenant Separatist allies.

So we had a game with them as enemies, a game where an alliance starts to be formed and a game where they are allies.

Halo 4 itself, I can kind of excuse, as it's such a narrow perspective... Though I still would have liked to have seen something like a Sangheili liaison officer on Infinity.

But the novels are taking us to an extreme in the other direction.
When it clicked in my head that ONI are actively plotting to make all of the Sangheili completely extinct by destroying their entire food supply via poisoning/genetic manipulation...
Well, that's just really disheartening and it's a direction that really could turn me off the entire Halo fiction.
In my head, genocide is always wrong and is never a viable retaliation, even when you're the victim.

As ONI agents that have been hand picked for a specific mission, it kind of goes without saying that Kilo-5 will be at the extreme end of Covenant hatred.
At this point though, there is just absolutely nothing to try and really balance that out, the other side of the coin, save a few Insurrectionists who are probably going to be wiped out soon enough anyway.
