There is actually a historical precedent for building different sizes of warship to look similar. The WW2-era German Navy built its battleships, battlecruisers and heavy cruisers with very similar silhouettes in order to confuse visual identification, with some success. I don't think this gambit would work as well against higher-tech detection and targeting systems, though.
