: Which is in keeping with the Visual Guide and First Strike, so they at least
: maintained what was established previously and that makes me smile.

You mean calling them cruisers (or light cruisers)?
Maybe it's maintaining something established, but when its that far out, that isn't necessarily a good thing.
Rather than adjust the size in FS or the Visual Guide as you mentioned, the more appropriate adjustment would be to re-classify it.

There are trends happening though.
To use our own historical classes, going from largest to smallest, you have:

Supercarrier - Such as the USS Enterprise (CVN-65) which is due to be retired next year and replaced by the USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78). There is currently a petition to have the as of yet unnamed CVN-80 become the new Enterprise.

Aircraft carrier - Such as the Russian Admiral Flota Sovetskovo Soyuza Kuznetsov or the USS Coral Sea (CV-43)

Battleship - Such as the USS Iowa. The symbols of naval power in the early 20th Century. As far as I am aware, there are no Battleships currently in service, nor any plans for new ones anywhere in the world.

Helicopter Carrier - This is a tricky one, thanks to the advent of the Harrier. It's generally been superseded by Light aircraft carriers (STOVL aircraft carriers) such as HMS Illustrious (R06) and Amphibious Assault Ships such as USS Wasp (LHD-1) or HMS Ocean (L12).

Battlecruiser - The only examples still in service are the Russian Kirov-class Battlecruisers. They are currently the largest and heaviest direct combat ships on active duty.
The general theory of the Battlecruiser was basically a Battleship with less armour, and thus faster.

The above are the extent of what are currently classed as capital ships.
It is a term that was only really meant to be applied to the very largest vessels.

Cruisers & Destroyers - The distinction here has become very blurred in recent times. Traditionally, a cruiser was a ship that fell between the battleship and the destroyer.
Now that the battleship has been consigned to history and with modern destroyers often being larger and more powerful than existing cruisers.
The most prominent examples in service are the Ticonderoga-class of the US Navy, which are more popularly known as AEGIS Cruisers.
However, classing them as Cruisers was actually a PR move. They were originally to be classed as Destroyers, but the AEGIS system was so advanced in the 80's, it was considered justifiable to reclassify them.
The AEGIS system is now finding its way onto Destroyers now, such as the Japanese Atago-class of Destroyers which are a similar size to the USS Ticonderoga.
Regardless though, a Cruiser is a big ship!

Frigate - These ones have been all over the place. In the modern day though, they are general purpose ships, smaller than a Destroyer, that often specialise towards Anti-Submarine warfare and have a helicopter deck and small hangar to the aft.

Corvette - These days they are essentially smaller, more agile frigates. Even down to a helicopter deck. The new class of "Littoral Combat Ship" in the US Navy are commonly considered equivalent to a Corvette.
Quite nifty looking things too.

Patrol Boat - Finally the end of the line. Small, fast and agile. Used to patrol coastlines which finds them doing everything from fisheries inspection, Search and Rescue anti-smuggling operations, river patrols and anti-piracy missions.
They are probably the most common type of military vessel in the world.
Examples include the Canadian Kingston-class , such as HMCS Whitehorse.
Despite their small size, some even still have a medium sized helicopter pad, such as Portugal's Viana do Castelo-class. No hangar though.

The trend is that ships in each class are getting larger. Some Patrol Boats are heading towards Corvette territory, with Corvette's approaching Frigates and then you have Destroyers that are larger than Cruisers.
