This really isn't how I've interpreted these instances. If it disintegrates into red, I do not consider that deactivating hardlight.
That, to me, is disintegration of a solid structure through whatever unstated means.

For example, the Didact did not simply deactivate the terminal Cortana was in, which would have left her AI chip, he completely disintegrated it and the contents, 'killing' her.
