In general, they've just become a bit redundant.

Back in the day, I used to love instruction booklets not so much for the instructions, but for the illustrations and story synopsis.
Few did them better than Nintendo, who remained a bastion of high quality full-colour manuals until very recently.

Good times.
However, for some time now the stories for many games have been far too complex to really be summarised in a manual.
Instead we tend to get novels (they make good 'bathroom' reading btw), numerous trailers and elaborate cutscenes to do that much more thoroughly.

We also get interactive in-game tutorials and multiple controller layouts that further make a printed manual somewhat unnecessary.

It's a shame they've gone, but on the other hand, the content has been very limited for many years now, and far better information is available online, including things like concept art and illustrations.

That said, a digital manual should always be available offline in the game itself.
This is what Nintendo now do.
You get a sheet of paper with quick reference information and details on how to read the full digital manual that is on the disc or game card.
Digital manuals, in theory, have the benefit where colour and illustrations should not really increase costs and so can be more elaborate.
