IMO, with the move to humanize the Chief in a 3rd : person context rather than the 'faceless' MC we play in video games, I : think the only choice is that he has more dialogue, and starts to build : that aspect of his personality and character. He's still faceless, but at : least he's more believable (to me) as a human super-soldier. People seem to forget that one of the first things to come out of MC's mouth in 'Halo' is to crack a joke. In retrospect, we recognize that as a sign of his personal rapport with Cortana, but at the time the game came out, I suspect most people wrote it off as John McClane-style bravado. I don't find Chief to be particularly chatty in FUD because all he's doing is asking questions and giving instructions. He's a professional soldier, not a smirking action hero. I would like to see one instance of his subtle dry wit come through, but that can wait until the mission is over and he links back up with his team. Kelly: "About time you showed up, Chief." John: "Took the scenic route."
