(This is in reply to the whole sub-thread, not just Bryan's post.)

While I understand that the green armor plating on the outside of the armor is not indicative of the actual tech running underneath it (regardless of whether you're going by the simplified generational system ("Mark") or the piece-by-piece system Halsey makes clear that she continued to use in her journal entry on January 7th, 2535), I believe that there can be no doubt as to the armor that John and the others were issued in the Damascus Materials Testing facility on Chi Ceti IV. It is confirmed in two separate, 343-sanctioned, and recent/current sources: the cover of "The Definitive Edition" of The Fall of Reach (which is the same image as this one), and the comic book interpretation of The Fall of Reach which is still ongoing (very clearly the artist's interpretation of the armor we see in my linked image, NOT the mecha-style armor designed by the talented Shinji Aramaki for The Package).

How can I use the cover of the definitive edition of The Fall of Reach as a source timestamping which armor they were first issued? Easy. :) I would like to draw your attention to three things:

1.) The lower left-hand corner of the right chestplate of the center SPARTAN (you should see "117" in white letters).

2.) The upper right-hand corner of the left chestplate of the leftmost SPARTAN (you should see Kelly-087's "rabbit" image in white).

And, most important of all, 3.) The lower left-hand corner of the rightmost SPARTAN's right chestplate (you should see "034" in white letters).

0-3-4. As in Sam-034. Who died in the armor that they were all first issued.

While I can't be sure that what I'm about to say is still current, this image is the very first image that 343 Industries employees see when they enter the building where they work (if they work at Bungie's old digs). It's on a giant painting-type-thing that you see when you open the door and look straight ahead.

I'm not making this stuff up! I swear!
