An Emerging Trend: Kill It NOW!

In Response To: Re: Instant Plot: Just Add Forerunner. (Archilen)

Another thing I'd like to see brought up is the emerging prominence of superweapons. You know, "If y'all thought Spartans were awesome, here's an Ubermech" or "SPACE KAWASAKIS IN SPACE!"

There's only so far you can go with UNSC secret weapons before the audience starts wondering "How come the UNSC is /loosing/ the war?"
And the truth is, some of the audience is already asking that.
So, ES, before you set out to make the Prototype look like a Marine BDU in comparison, remember that the audience is willing to suspend disbelief only so much, and also remember that the weapon doesn't matter. The weapon is boring after the first five minutes. It's the person behind, or in front, or inside the weapon that makes a story.

: I've also noticed the Forerunner artifact trend - writers seem to prefer it
: because it would be significantly harder to craft a Halo plot without it.
: However, it does get old fast and it takes away the mystery and
: significance of Forerunner artifacts when they become so mundane it seems
: the humans and the Covenant stumble on them every other day.

: It's not very dissimilar from the ONI shortcut that gets used a lot these
: days: the UNSC has some really advanced tech or something really unusual
: happened (like discovery of Forerunner artifacts), but no one else knew
: about it because the ONI covered it up. Also, I don't like how the ONI
: seems to be becoming this secret all-powerful evil organization. They were
: always secretive and even ruthless, but as of late it seems like their
: malevolence and influence is being highlighted way too much.

That trend is actually pretty old, and I think the fans are as much to blame as the developers.
Back during the darkest times of 2008, after we'd learned that Halo Wars was going to feature (SURPRISE!) the Flood, but before it had launched, the Halo Wars Forums were aflame with arguments over how good of an idea that was.

The argument against it was that the UNSC couldn't have encountered the Flood, or Cortana would have found something about it. The argument for the Flood's inclusion was "ONI Cover-up".

So, ONI's status as the nebulous keeper of nebulous secrets whose agents mutter "Classified" like a verbal tic exists partly because fans have been okay with it.

But mostly, it's an easy way out.
