Wow, I should really read other responses before I post, but this ties back into the potboiler aspect. You'd think that the Forerunner would have been a bit more conscientious about where they left all their superweapons and fleets :P To me, the overuse of Spartans, ONI, and Forerunner as macguffins, cheats or retcons are the crux of Halo's story weaknesses (even if I think the universe is great and overall the storytelling is well done.)
