In Response To: Instant Plot: Just Add Forerunner. (Quirel)

: What I've noticed is that the relics the Forerunner left behind work as a
: story device because they are so mysterious, and so integral to the
: backstory. And I feel that the relics are in danger of becoming a cheap
: plot device.

: The Human-Covenant war began because one group of Covenant learned that the
: Humans were 'Reclaimers', and mistakenly interpreted that to mean we were
: Forerunner. The War ended with a struggle over the Forerunner's greatest
: weapon, at which point Humanity (or some small part of it) realized its
: inheritance.

: The pivotal role that the Forerunner Artifacts play in the conflict is a
: blessing and a curse. They can tie the story of the war together and
: provide a common theme.

: Unfortunately, the relics also have the potential to devolve into a McGuffin
: of the Week (Or year. Or every other year, depending on release schedule).
: The Facts are simple: -The Humans don't realize what the Forerunner Relics
: are until the end of the war.
: -The Covenant mainly fight groundside to recover the Forerunner Relics.
: -Every story involving the conflict over the Relics has to maintain the
: Status Quo.
: -Because a Human victory is preferable, the Relics are either destroyed or
: taken in by ONI, ultimately ending up here:

: There's some interesting ways the conflict over the Relics can be played.
: Maybe ONI loaded some of those relics onto a subway train and drove it
: under the Covenant's capital ships when they tried to glass, thus buying
: the colony time to evacuate or fight back. Ultimately, however, the
: stories are going to start sounding similar.
: *cough* *cough* Halo Wars *cough*

: So, please remember when writing the future Halo games, novels, and comics.
: The Forerunner Artifacts are interesting and integral to the backstory,
: but cannot carry the franchise for long on their lonesome.

: And another thing: The Spartans become a Hell of a lot less interesting when
: they're demoted to redshirts. Keep that in mind.

I've also noticed the Forerunner artifact trend - writers seem to prefer it because it would be significantly harder to craft a Halo plot without it. However, it does get old fast and it takes away the mystery and significance of Forerunner artifacts when they become so mundane it seems the humans and the Covenant stumble on them every other day.

It's not very dissimilar from the ONI shortcut that gets used a lot these days: the UNSC has some really advanced tech or something really unusual happened (like discovery of Forerunner artifacts), but no one else knew about it because the ONI covered it up. Also, I don't like how the ONI seems to be becoming this secret all-powerful evil organization. They were always secretive and even ruthless, but as of late it seems like their malevolence and influence is being highlighted way too much.
