The Hierarchs know that we are Forerunners but the rank and file do not. As far as I am aware they never saw us as followers of their religion. You need to be considered to subscribe to a religion before you can be considered to be a heretic. : Yes, "defector" is an ill-fitting term. I believe the human saying : is: "The enemy of my enemy is my friend." The Sangheili are : still an independent entity, and we allied ourselves with human forces to : reach a common goal. The alliance happened after the fact so it was not the cause, therefore the Elites did not defect. They were ex-members before they formed the alliance. They were not attracted by our ideology before they left and they did not leave of their own volition because they preferred some, unspecified, Human ideology over the Covenant's.
