: It's surprisingly on more modern ships rather than the older ones. Apparently

: them from the outside as spinning.

I suppose I can live with it as a means of making military vessels cheaper to mass produce.
Rotating sections would surely have their own significant drawbacks though, like maintenance. Anything mechanical like that is inherently less reliable.

Ben Rich, the leader of the Lockheed Skunk Works when they built the F-117 and previously an engineer on the U-2 and SR-71, theorised that it would be far more cost effective to build small numbers of high quality aircraft for peace time and training, combined with a large force of cheaper aircraft built to a lower standard for high-intensity combat operations.
Things like why does a tyre have to be designed to such a high standard that it can withstand at least 5000 take-offs/landings when you could make many more cheaper tyres that are replaced every hundred or so.

I could see that sort of logic being applied to ship design as the war with the Covenant progresses and being able to get more ships into service as quickly as possible becomes the priority.
