In Response To: To the developers...IPX through IP tunneling (mterlouw) : What are your thoughts on this...tunneling IPX through IP like in RFC1234
Interesting. Out of curiosity, though... how do you know the Xbox uses IPX at all? : One question is how would Halo react to the lag that would not normally be
Well, sure there is. The same latency you'd see on a local area network applies; it's low, but not nonexistent. A bigger question is whether or not Halo's engine includes any client-side prediction. I don't believe any Bungie title ever has; Marathon didn't, and Oni had no netplay. I don't THINK Myth did, although I wouldn't claim certain knowledge. : I would just like to know what the actual Halo developers think about this.
Even if it worked, it probably wouldn't work well-- I'm betting that since they knew Online play wouldn't be included in this version of Halo, any work they'd done on code to compensate for Internet latency (like client side prediction) probably isn't there. And I'm sure you read Matt's post about patches, which didn't QUITE say there wouldn't be any, but... well :)
