Surround is a rather vague describer for speakers, two speaker systems have simulated surround sound where they bounce the sound of nearby walls to create a feeling of surround, a 4 speaker system that pumps out stereo is like surround. Dolby 5.1 describes a system where sounds are digitally decoded and split out to 5 speakers (A front left right, rear left right and a center channel) and one subwoofer.
