In Response To: Hmmm... (stan)

: See that's confusing to me. For a number of reasons. First, they all meet in
: a physical 'lobby.' Second, in the scene on (the map with the satellite
: dishes, I forgot its name) they're interacting as if they (the Spartans
: and Elites) are actual people. They're playing around on their half-pipe,
: they talk about going to a concert together (even though two sound British
: and one Australian, meaning they probably aren't all in the same
: location), and then when they decide to play a game, they all go to the
: on-the-map-and-thus-in-the-virtual-world lobby. And while we do see the
: pre-game lobby screen (and the achievements), and folks pop into and out
: of existence, and folks die and respawn, I kinda had the feeling that you
: might have been going for a Toy Story type situation (or something like
: this story I wrote a few years back).

: I'll take a look at the second half (I had to head to the library before I
: could finish) and see if it's clearer to me there.

Wow - I'm having trouble understanding how you misunderstood this.

It's pretty clear they're playing online - the foundry hallway is the only non-standard part of the whole thing, and I thought it was a pretty clever representation of the pregame lobby itself. You're stuck in a small space with the other players in the game, and you can annoy the hell out of them if you choose to. (Okay, so maybe you can't jump on their heads - but you can certainly talk over them if you want.)

In fact, the only non-immersive part of that whole sequence is that you can't quit out of a pregame lobby. ;)
