We knew there would be a side arm in some form, but it was only assumed that it would be more like the M6D, since everything up till now pointed that way. Though any thinking person would take into account that the things pointing to it were unofficial, dramatized, and subject to change. This is the first where we get a clear picture of how the Halo3 side arm is going to function and where it will generally fall into the weapons design of the game. And quite frankly I would wonder why they'd bring the M6D as it worked in Halo1 when we already have both the BR and Carbine fullfilling the same role. Now it looks like the M6G will serve as short-to-mid range, while the BR and Carbine will be more suited to cover mid-to-long range.
