Achievements are Evolving and Do you own a 360? | |

In Response To: Re: What's the attraction of points etc? (Rockslider) I think that the questions regarding Achievements are all coming from those who don't own a 360 yet. I don't mean this disrespectfully, but the purpose of achievements becomes evident quite quickly after you get one. I love 'em (and I have a low gamerscore). It gives me the original '70s and '80 gaming thrill that I had when getting to level whatever on whatever and besting my best score. "Achievements" were the only thing that drove arcade video games for the first 20 years of their existence. It wasn't their story, graphics, or open-endedness that did it, that is for sure. Hats off to whoever it was who thought up Achievements and Gamerscore. It takes us back to our check-the-coin-return-on-the-vending-machine-to-get-a-forgotten-quarter-that-we-can-use -at-the-seedy take-our-lives-in-our-hands arcade. The implementation of the Achievements in Launch titles was awful! Kameo might be the most infamous example of this. You simply get achievements if you play the game. Beat the boss and get an Achievement. (btw, if you check my gamercard, those Kameo points were put up by my sons who want me to stay ahead of their older cousin - but I take full credit for my 500 Viva Pinata Achievements). As has been mentioned several times in this thread, the fun Achievements are those that require creativity or extensive exploration on the part of the gamer. I am sincerely looking forward to finding out what Bungie has decided on for their Achievements. I think to a very small extent, the creativity of the developer is reflected in what they have chosen for Achievements. With the new Achievements policies, this is going to be even more evident.
