In Response To: Re: What's the attraction of points etc? (Sep7imus [subnova]) : Well, that kind of describes playing video games in general, doesn't it? It's : all about achieving empty goals. : I'm assuming that the alternative you have in mind to what your describing is
I don't like achievements. Yes, they can be fun if geared correctly. I think the guys making Crackdown are totally on the ball in terms of making them fun and pushing the player to experiment, but in general I don't like them. They more or less quantify the user's experience, and I think attempting to quantify something that has (up until the 360) been largely a qualitatively regarded experience makes it hollow for the young and casual, as well as the seasoned and hardcore players. Now your experience is a number instead of a feeling. I find myself, with every 360 game I buy, trying to jump through hoops to get achievments. I don't think of myself as a particularly competitive person, but I find the omnipresent achievement system slowly changing that. That really takes me away from the heart of the games I play. I find that my sense of immersion completely dissolves when I get focused on an achievement. Aiming for a predetermined goal completely takes your mind out of the context of the game. If the sense of immersion is important to a developer, then I'd reccomend they find a way to either rail against the achievement system, or they find a way of making it intrude on the user experience as little as possible. Maybe make them all secret, so you have nothing to aim for ahead of time. I've felt that the achievement system cheapens the experience, not matter how well done a game is. ~Ma1
