In Response To: Re: What's the attraction of points etc? (Ma1agate) : Now your experience is a number instead of a feeling. I liked the way you put all that. Of course, one doesn't have to buy into the achievements business; but then you might have the annoyance of having lots of achievement junkies (my naughty new term for them) keep going on about how feeble your points are or whatever. Tiresome. You might feel obliged to go and jump through the requisite hoops just so they stop thinking you're a 'noob' or something. : If the sense of immersion is important to a developer... It had better be if they want MY money! : ...then I'd reccomend they find a way to either rail against the achievement system,
DarkSim suggested that idea too, but it would probably only have very limited success. As soon as the first players started figuring out what you have to do for achievements, you'll have lists cropping up at fansites and in magazines, so word would soon get around. A few individuals might have the willpower to avert their eyes and just let things come naturally, but not many. Anyone interested in points at all is probably going to want to get their tally looking impressive as soon as possible. It'll be a race.
