I wouldn't call him just Sergeant to his face, he worked for his stripes and WILL eat anyone alive who would dare even think about 'demoting' him. It would be like calling a Lt. General just Lieutenant, afterwards you'd need preperation H for the ass reaming they'd give you.

As for being a Spartan 1, all I've seen is that he was part of the project, not one of the projects. For all we know he was some leatherneck grunt assigned to stand sentry next to the armory for 8 hours a day. Basically, I'll only belive it if Bungie confirms it for certain.
