: I see your point, but you're missing mine. Your comparison is a little
: extreme. Of course for Olympic athletes, it is that important. But you can
: evaluate yourself to a certain extent. I've taken guitar lessons from a
: very good musician, but most of what I've learned has come from practice
: and reading materials that that same teacher pretty much quoted from. An
: Olympic Athlete probably couldn't find a direct Guide To Be An Olympic
: Athlete, but for guitar players---and gamers---those sort of resources are
: numerous, not to mention free.

: I evaluate myself at guitar by playing for other guitar players, and I base
: my skill level on how they react and how better, or worse, they play
: compared to me. I watch videos, listen to songs, and I read articles by
: musicians. I don't gloat and think I'm the best, and that's what pushes me
: to better improve. Halo players evaluate themselves by competeing against
: other players. If they don't gloat, they'll see there flaws and, through
: practice, improve themselves. Hot dog eaters starve themselves for days,
: and then compete. If they lose, they consider why, and try again next
: time.

: Of course outside evaluation like these Game-Lessons are valid. I'm just
: saying there are a lot better ways than paying for it.

Your example proves my point, actually.

I tried for a couple of years to learn how to play guitar on my own. I failed. (I tried this because where i was living at the time, there wasn't anyone who KNEW how to play guitar.) After I moved, I made arrangements to pay someone to teach me to play - but just before the lessons were supposed to start, a good friend offered to do it - for free.

He was very good - and because of him, I learned how to play guitar. Had he not been there, I'd have paid someone for the service - and gladly.

Because a particular technique (self-evaluation, reading, individual practice) works for you, do NOT assume it works for everyone. Some people NEED feedback from a live person to really 'get it'.

This is easily as true for Halo gameplay as it is for guitar skills.
