: What? You mean all those Olympic athletes with personal coaches and trainers
: are just fooling themselves? They should just read tips and practice, and
: not actually have anyone, say, evaluate what they're doing wrong so that
: they can do it better?

: (No, I'm not saying Halo is - or should be - an Olympic sport. I'm saying
: that the CONCEPT of learning from someone better than you is totally
: legitimate - in skiing, boxing, swimming, personal weight training, or
: Halo.)

: You people make me sad. You don't want the service, fine, don't buy the
: service. (I'm not - my skill level in Halo isn't important enough to me to
: pay money to have it improved. There are lots and lots of people, however,
: who don't feel the way I do.)

: What I don't understand is why folks can't just accept that this is a
: reasonable service offered by people qualified to offer it - whether you,
: personally want to use it or not.

: And stan - I know it's just your nature to be a dick, even when you get it,
: but come on - don't give the clueless garbage to feed on. If you're gonna
: make fun of it, at least pick a reasonable analogy.

I see your point, but you're missing mine. Your comparison is a little extreme. Of course for Olympic athletes, it is that important. But you can evaluate yourself to a certain extent. I've taken guitar lessons from a very good musician, but most of what I've learned has come from practice and reading materials that that same teacher pretty much quoted from. An Olympic Athlete probably couldn't find a direct Guide To Be An Olympic Athlete, but for guitar players---and gamers---those sort of resources are numerous, not to mention free.

I evaluate myself at guitar by playing for other guitar players, and I base my skill level on how they react and how better, or worse, they play compared to me. I watch videos, listen to songs, and I read articles by musicians. I don't gloat and think I'm the best, and that's what pushes me to better improve. Halo players evaluate themselves by competeing against other players. If they don't gloat, they'll see there flaws and, through practice, improve themselves. Hot dog eaters starve themselves for days, and then compete. If they lose, they consider why, and try again next time.

Of course outside evaluation like these Game-Lessons are valid. I'm just saying there are a lot better ways than paying for it.
