Well, hypothetically speaking, a rangefinder would be useful for determining the distance to a target *if* the firearm had some kind of gyroscopic sensor that could adjust the point-of-aim shown in a HUD for the rotational force of the Halo... but such a thing is unlikely to be standard equipment unless humanity has fought in a place where this has been a problem before.

As far as distance is concerned, a .22 caliber round will go at least a mile. Putting it where you want it from that distance is the challenging part.

But there's no reason it couldn't be a sight/rangefinder *and* a laser designator. When you get down to it, the main difference between the two is that one has a higher-energy beam so that it's easier for the semi-autonomous weapons to 'see', and I expect there will be significant improvements in powercell tech between now and then.

Bungie may have originally intended the laser sight to make it easier for people to aim while playing in 3pp, but it's an idea with so much potential I expect a modmaker will do it if bungie doesn't.
