There ARE some very obvious imperfections (such as LOD scaling on soem hills), and if they had pre-rendered it to simulate some future, more powerful, hardware, I'd expect it to look a LOT better than it does.

You are wrong. Halo has been demonstrated in real time on numerous occasions (with someone controlling the player to show how it moves around). The Incide video for instance shows this pretty clearly.
