In Response To: a weird stance on the violence in halo 2 (Raneb) : this article was just run in my local paper sorry if it is old : http://www.newsday.com/news/opinion/ny-vppin234094158dec23,0,4366697.column : enjoy Errrm... yeah, right. Video games do not--cannot--train one to be a soldier. Video games can decrease response times, develop spatial awareness, and enhance critical thinking skills; I'm willing to concede all of that, and I consider that one of the side benefits of gaming. However. No one argues that playing Madden 2005 will prepare me for coaching major-league football. No one argues that playing Dead or Alive 3 will prepare me to enter the Ultimate Fighting Championship. No one argues that I should be certified on fixed-wing aircraft on the basis of playing the hell out of MS Flight Simulator. No one (sane) argues that playing a Harry Potter game can teach me to use magic. Playing video games can develop skills and talents that could be useful on the battlefield, but that doesn't mean that H2 is a trainer for the Army. Playing an FPS bears as much resemblance to actual fighting as looking through a telescope has to walking on the moon. |
